MDL Launches Technical Services Divison to Capitalise on Global Growth

A major new Technical Services Division – the first to supply more than laser products – has been launched by eye-safe global laser measurement technology specialist, Measurement Devices Ltd (MDL).

The new division, which will operate globally but is based at MDL Ltd’s headquarters in York, England, will provide 3D laser measurement and consultancy services for customers’ specific projects and also undertake innovative assignments to demonstrate the pioneering capability of the company’s existing technology and new products as they become available.

MDL Ltd, led by managing director, Elaine Ball, has appointed geomatics engineer, Mark Reid, 32, (pictured) as technical services manager in charge of developing the new division. Mark Reid has more than 11 years LIDAR and laser scanning industry experience and joins from Middle East engineering and technology business, Consolidated Gulf Company, Qatar, where he helped deliver some of the world’s largest laser-scanning-based turnkey engineering projects in the oil and gas sector.

He says: “The global laser measurement market is forecast to double in size in the next two years and our new Technical Services Division will ensure that as many businesses as possible can benefit from MDL’s ground-breaking technology.

“Many companies which can benefit from using the latest laser surveying technology either do not have a big enough requirement to justify investing in our technology or may not have the funds to do so.

“By accessing the Technical Services Division on an ad hoc basis they will be able to call out specialists from our agents and distributors throughout the world to carry out assignments for them when they are required without the need to invest in technology or train their own staff as operators.

“The new division is also available to carry out certain assignments directly for larger end-users to demonstrate the capabilities of the latest technology.”

MDL, which also has offices in Scotland, England, Canada, Texas, USA and Melbourne, Australia, has two operating divisions: Sensors, which designs and manufactures generic time-of-flight laser distance meters and Systems, which designs and manufactures laser-based positioning and 3D-scanning products. The business is active in markets including quarrying, civil engineering, mining, marine and automotive.
