Merrick Expands Its Fuels & Energy Group With the Addition of Carpenter and Heuer

Aurora, Colorado – March 27, 2009 – Merrick & Company (Merrick & Company), an $85 million engineering, architecture, construction management, and geospatial solutions firm, has expanded its fuels & energy group (Merrick Alternative Energy) with the addition of Bart Carpenter as senior technical specialist and Greg Heuer also as senior technical specialist.  Merrick’s fuels & energy group has focused on the alternative energy industry since the late 1990’s when the firm partnered with Coors Brewing Company to purchase a brewing-residual waste stream from the brewery and upgrade it to fuel-grade ethanol under a long-term contract for Colorado’s Front Range Clean Air Program. As the lead entity, Merrick assumed the project development role, secured the financing, provided engineering and design services, procured new equipment and materials, and constructed the new facility. Merrick also owns and maintains the operation and, since that landmark project, the firm has expanded its work in alternative fuels.

Carpenter (right) has over 25 years of engineering and management experience in the downstream petroleum industry.  Most recently, he was employed with ConocoPhillips in Houston, Texas, as a refining strategy manager.  He holds a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Heuer brings over 28 years of experience to Merrick and expertise in methods and practices for producing fuel grade biofuels. Prior to joining Merrick, he served for two years for Cilion, Inc., located in California, as vice president of process engineering.  In this position, he helped to design and construct the a state-of-the art, as well as the largest dry mill ethanol facility in the state. Prior to that, he was a process consultant to the ethanol industry, including working with Merrick.  In past positions, he served as vice president of research and development for High Plains Corp.
