Leica Image Manager Selected by the Netherlands Province

Norcross, GA — Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging today announced that Flevoland Province of the Netherlands will implement Leica Image Manager. Officially founded in 1986, Flevoland includes the main body of the land reclaimed from the former Zuiderzee (or South-Sea), which was closed by the Enclosure Dam of 1932.

Leica Image Manager is an Open Geospatial Consortium and International Organization for Standardization (OGC/ISO) compliant solution for efficiently storing and quickly sharing imagery throughout the enterprise. This dynamic solution comprehensively addresses problems universal to governments, businesses and other organizations that often work with geospatial data too large to be centrally stored, or rapidly shared.

Imagem, an authorized Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging reseller in the Netherlands recently discussed the benefits of Leica Image Manager with the Province of Flevoland. Since then, the Province has made plans to implement Leica Image Manager as the underlying technology in Flevoviewer: From Water to Land, Flevoland’s official public website. This website contains cultural, educational and promotional information, capturing the history of the man-made Province through aerial imagery. On Flevoviewer: From Water to Land, both GIS professionals and other visitors may explore datasets and view the changing landscape through virtual journeys back in time. With the historical datasets, users may also search areas of interest based on address and postal code.

The Province developed the website using a Web Mapping Services (WMS) server. Leica Image Manager will empower Flevoland to unlock all their existing geospatial information, implementing web-based geoportals.

“Leica Image Manager is a flexible solution enabling Flevoland Province to provide the public access to imagery, while also including growth potential for internal GIS professionals,” said  Wouter Brokx, Managing Director , Imagem. “Leica Image Manager will greatly enhance the existing site’s performance and delivery capabilities.”

Leica Image Manager will provide data management and serving capabilities, streamlining data request to delivery and simplifying the process of adding and removing datasets. Ensuring a high level of security through administrator defined privileges, Leica Image Manager will enable users to add, select, view and download datasets from the database.

“Leica Image Manager will solve Flevoland Province’s problems associated with securely discovering, describing, cataloging and serving imagery,” said Mladen Stojic, Senior Vice President, Product Management and Marketing, Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging. “Implementing OGC standards (WMS, WCS and CS-W) and the ECW-P protocol, Leica Image Manager provides rapid delivery of unprecedented volumes of imagery to domain specific desktop and consumer web client applications.”
