Brookfield, WI. – R.D. Whitling & Associates, a land surveying firm located in Murrysville, Pa., has merged with R.A. Smith & Associates, Inc. and its National Survey & Engineering division, Brookfield, Wis., effective January 20.
The merger will allow National Survey & Engineering to provide land surveying services to clients throughout western Pennsylvania. R.A. Smith & Associates and its National Survey & Engineering division is a leading civil engineering, planning, surveying, landscape architecture, GIS and 3D visualization consulting firm headquartered in Brookfield, Wis. with offices in Appleton and Oshkosh, Wis. and Tarentum, Pa.
Robert D. Whitling, P.L.S., president and owner of R.D. Whitling & Associates, will serve as survey manager of the newly formed R.D. Whitling Survey Group under the National Survey & Engineering division. He will be responsible for continued service to Whitling’s existing clients, National Survey & Engineering clients, as well as new clients in the western Pennsylvania area.

Whitling’s Murrysville office will remain open and initially serve as the primary survey operations location. Upon completion of new office space during 2006, the R.D. Whitling Survey Group’s primary operations will relocate to National Survey & Engineering’s Tarentum office. However, an office will be maintained in Murrysville for client convenience.
National Survey & Engineering’s staff has worked jointly with R.D. Whitling on the Pittsburgh Mills regional shopping mall project since September 2004. Whitling has provided the survey and construction stakeout services for the major retail development, while National Survey & Engineering has provided the sitework engineering services for the project as well as many other Pittsburgh-area projects.
“A strong working relationship between the staff at National Survey & Engineering and R.D. Whitling is already in place,” said John Frydrych, branch manager of National Survey & Engineering’s Tarentum office. “We are looking to expand our capabilities. Bob Whitling is highly regarded and R.D. Whitling & Associates has extensive construction staking, GPS and title survey services. These services are important to our growth plans.”
Wisconsin-based National Survey & Engineering is Wisconsin’s largest surveying operation and one of the largest in the Midwest.
Robert Whitling said the firm’s five employees will be moving to National Survey & Engineering. “Our firm was built on personal service and responsiveness. These are qualities shared by National Survey & Engineering.” He said, “Our clients will gain from the ability to work with the staff of National Survey & Engineering. We will now provide them with more comprehensive site planning and engineering services.”
