Texas Firm Expands SUE Leadership Team

McKim & Creed, Inc., one of the largest surveying and mapping firms in the South, continues its growth in Texas by expanding its Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) leadership team.

Longtime McKim & Creed manager Sean Patterson, CST Level IV, has been promoted to regional SUE manager in Texas. Joining Mr. Patterson is Robert Mjoen, PE, MBA who will serve as the company’s new SUE TxDOT project manager (PM) and utility coordinator (UC).

As regional SUE manager, Mr. Patterson will oversee McKim & Creed’s professional SUE services throughout Texas and southwestern U.S. In his role as project manager and utility coordinator, Mr. Mjoen will manage all TxDOT SUE and utility coordination projects, as well as utility coordination projects involving the relocation and adjustment of utilities in conjunction with highway design, construction or maintenance projects.

SUE is an engineering process that uses utility records research, non-destructive geophysical prospecting methods, land survey and vacuum excavation to verify the existence, size, material type, condition and exact location of subsurface utilities. SUE has been credited with reducing project risks and controlling project safety, costs, schedule and utility damages. SUE has proven to be effective in helping prevent accidents associated with underground utility damage on construction sites.

“Sean has earned a great deal of respect in the SUE industry during his nearly 30-year career. He learned the SUE field processes in the early 1990s and has built a successful career based on that foundation. Quality of work, communication and commitment are his principles.

Bob Mjoen

“Bob is a highly qualified engineer who knows how to solve problems and has successfully managed large transportation projects for the Colorado Department of Transportation. Together, Sean and Bob have led thousands of SUE, utility coordination and engineering projects. They offer a level of experience and industry knowledge that brings McKim & Creed’s already outstanding utility services to a whole new level,” said Jason Jernigan, RPLS, McKim & Creed’s regional director of geomatics services in Texas.

Mr. Patterson joined McKim & Creed—an employee-owned, nearly 600-person engineering and surveying firm—in 2005. For the past decade, he has managed McKim & Creed’s SUE services in the Mid-Atlantic. In May he relocated to Texas to oversee SUE services in the Southwest. “I am very excited to bring my family to the great state of Texas and to strengthen McKim & Creed’s SUE services here,” he said.

Mr. Mjoen joined McKim & Creed in June. For the past 30+ years he has worked throughout Texas and Colorado as a construction project engineer, project manager and traffic engineer. He has built a solid reputation for effectively managing multiple, large-scale construction, design and safety improvement projects. “I have been impressed with the quality of McKim & Creed’s services, technologies and personnel, and am honored to join a leadership team that is poised to elevate those services,” said Mr. Mjoen.

McKim & Creed provides full-service geomatics services from its three Texas offices in Dallas, Houston and Austin. In addition to SUE, McKim & Creed provides airborne and mobile LiDAR/scanning; unmanned aerial systems (drones); and hydrographic and conventional surveying services. In 2019 Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine ranked McKim & Creed the ninth largest surveying and mapping firm in Texas and Louisiana. In ENR’s ranking of the top design firms in Texas and Louisiana, McKim & Creed’s ranking improved from #85 in 2019 to #76 in 2020.
