Renishaw Releases Updated Void Scanner Cavity Monitoring System

Engineering technology leader announces release of updated version of Void Scanner laser-based cavity monitoring system.

June 2017 – The latest version of Void Scanner is the first cavity monitoring system (CMS) to be fully developed, engineered and manufactured under the Renishaw brand. Following major investment in new production and servicing facilities at its York, UK, site, Void Scanner now has the backing of Renishaw’s world-class production values and global support. First launched in 2008, Void Scanner is a high-speed, low-cost CMS used in the mining and civil engineering industries to produce fast, accurate 3D laser scans of voids where access is limited, dangerous or prohibited.

Void Scanner’s easy-to-use, rugged design allows operators to solve underground-surveying challenges quickly and economically. System improvements include better internal gearings, enhanced point cloud quality and surfacing, and improved data accuracy for better on-site decision making, despite challenging locations. Void Scanner’s Cavity Profiler – VS software has also been improved to with greater functionality, including multi-station project capabilities. This means users can scan from multiple locations and view the resulting scans together in real time for a complete 3D representation of the site.

According to Karl Bradshaw, Global Technical Sales Manager for Renishaw’s mining product range, “Renishaw has been supplying laser measurement solutions to the mining and quarrying industry for over 30 years. We know our customers and we know the conditions in which they are using the products. With many units having already survived years of demanding use in the field, this updated Void Scanner builds on that foundation of sound quality and extreme durability.”

Renishaw has also released a new optional Wi-Fi Box accessory for use with the new Void Scanner. Wireless communication enables the operator to control the laser scanner and send scan data from a safe location over distances up to 50 m.

Martin Carr, General Manager of Renishaw’s Spatial Measurement Division added, “We are exceptionally proud of the development efforts involved in bringing this new cavity monitoring system to market. From the starting point of listening to our customers to understand and evaluate their needs, through the significant redesign, engineering and testing we have produced a high quality, high performing system designed for the most demanding of environments.”
