Proteus Geo Works with AECOM to Test New Bathymetry Service

Proteus Geo, a leading provider of satellite-based mapping services and data, is working with global infrastructure services firm AECOM to test its new satellite derived bathymetry service. The two companies recently completed a day of workshops, where AECOM experts looked at how the enhanced water depth data provided by the DHI analysis of DigitalGlobe satellite data could support the delivery of real-life projects. The workshops were designed to increase understanding of how the satellite-derived data would be used on real projects to further aid the development of the service.

Over the past four years, Proteus Geo has worked in partnership with DHI, the world renowned consultant group within water environments, to provide a vast range of customers with bathymetry data, derived from DigitalGlobe satellites. Now the European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded Proteus Geo and DHI with substantial financial backing to improve the efficiency of the data processing chain and encourage the wider use of this source of vital information.

Realising that understanding customer needs will be crucial for the development of the new service, Proteus Geo has brought in AECOM to test the data across a range of potential applications. AECOM has a global network of experts who work closely with clients to monitor, manage and develop coastlines around the world. From the design of marinas and small craft harbours to tsunami hazard analysis and numerical modelling for hydrodynamics, waves, sediments and coastal processes, AECOM teams regularly use bathymetry data when delivering projects.

AECOM’s Regional Director for Geospatial & Data Services, Kenny Monteath, said: “Knowledge of the depth of water is fundamental to the delivery of a great range of projects delivered along the world’s coastlines. With extensive experience of working in these terrains, AECOM is well placed to test the new bathymetry data captured by satellites. Our validation of the data on real world projects will help strengthen the final product and improve our understanding of how the service could support the work we deliver for our clients.”

Richard Flemmings, Director of Proteus Geo commented on how working with AECOM provides his company with real commercial insight: “Involving end users in the design and creation of our new satellite derived bathymetry service gives us an excellent understanding of how our data will be applied in the real world. By having AECOM as part of the team, we are drawing on a vast pool of international expertise to assist in product and service development and validation.”

About Bathymetry
Bathymetry data provides the depth of water in oceans, seas and lakes and hence creates a map of the ground underneath the waves.
