Timmons Group Attains Licensed Pilot, FAA Exemption to Operate Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Richmond, VA – April 13, 2016 – Timmons Group, a leader in engineering and technology, received its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Section 333 Exemption. This authorization will allow the firm to fly Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for aerial survey, inspections, and photo/video modeling. This approval, in addition to having a licensed pilot on staff, will grant Timmons Group the ability to use UAS for surveying and mapping of existing site conditions.

The use of UAS will provide effective and accurate information of preconstruction and post construction conditions, including topography, cartographic data, and inventory of natural resources and adjacent buildings.

“The use of UAS technology provides a safer option for reaching places that were nearly impossible before,” said Chris Dodson, Principal of Field Operations at Timmons Group. “It gathers site information that can easily and quickly be communicated to our clients.”

In addition to receiving the Section 333 Exemption and having a licensed pilot, Timmons Group acquired aircraft registration and certification, and operational approval by law. Having a licensed pilot on staff ensures proper communication with airplane pilots in flight. “The future for UAS technology in the A/E/C industry is exciting and Timmons Group will continue to stay on the forefront of this technology in order to benefit our clients and our industry,” said Dodson.
