Dayton, Ohio (June 2, 2015) – The joint venture of Woolpert and KZF Design has been selected to provide full design and construction services for the replacement of aging schools serving U.S. military families in Japan, and other mission-oriented facilities.
The new contract for the design of modern school facilities has been procured by the U.S. Army’s Japan Engineer District under the 21st Century Education Initiative of the Department of Defense Education Activities (DoDEA) program.
Woolpert is a national architecture, engineering and geospatial firm headquartered in Dayton, Ohio. KZF Design is an architecture, engineering, planning and interior design firm based in Cincinnati.
The team is committed to supporting the full range of facility needs in Japan, to ensure success in meeting all military requirements.
The department is committed to renovating or replacing obsolete school buildings to provide sustainable, modern learning environments that support today’s educational practices and technology needs. DoDEA operates 180 schools globally, including 49 schools in Asia.
The redesigned school buildings will feature open, flexible spaces that accommodate multiple learning and teaching styles, and support the delivery of a dynamic, flexible curriculum. Life-cycle cost-effectiveness is also a priority in the new facilities’ design.
Under the new contract, Woolpert will be responsible for the full range of design services in collaboration with KZF Design. Woolpert has been continuously involved with the DoDEA program since 2004. In September 2014, the firm was chosen to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Norfolk District/DoDEA Design Center on replacing schools located in the U.S. and overseas.
Woolpert was named the 2014 recipient of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Design Honor Award and the Building of the Future Award for the design of the Barkley Elementary School in Fort Campbell, Ky., one of the first DoDEA schools.

The joint venture’s indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity agreement with the U.S. Army’s Japan Engineer District features a one-year term and optional renewal for four additional years. The project is valued at $32 million, to be shared among several contracts.
Woolpert’s design team will complete its work from five design centers, including Atlanta, Ga.; Charlotte, N.C.; Dayton; and Fairview Heights, Ill. In addition, the staffs of KZF Design and Woolpert will work together as an integrated team on site in Japan.
