Berntsen International Granted Patent to Bolster Underground Utility Locating

Madison, WI, Feb. 17, 2015 — United States Patent no. 8,947,205, issued on Feb. 3, was assigned to Berntsen International Inc. (Madison, Wis.). The patent, issued to William C. Rushing, VP of Research and Development at Berntsen, bolsters Berntsen’s InfraMarker line of products to locate and map underground utilities.

The patent recognizes the uniqueness of Rushing’s design to combine a magnet with electronic marking as a means of precisely identifying an underground point. The marker can be placed underground and located with a portable magnetic locator while also receiving and/or transmitting information about the asset associated with that point. Berntsen uses the technology recognized in this patent in its InfraMarker System which combines magnetic locating and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to identify underground utility assets such as gas valves, water laterals, weld points and more.

“The patent is recognition of over six years of work in this leading technology”, says Rhonda Rushing, President of Berntsen International. “We will continue to build our RFID technology products and systems to reduce the cost and risk of underground utility locating.”
