Woolpert’s Designs Transform Former Kmart Into Modern Retail Facility

Dayton, OH (Feb. 3, 2015) — Woolpert recently completed design and engineering plans for a community center redevelopment that will transform a former Kmart store into a modern retail facility, which will be occupied by three new anchor tenants.

Woolpert is a national architecture, engineering and geospatial firm headquartered in Dayton.

Brixmor Property Group, the nation’s largest wholly owned portfolio of grocery-anchored community and neighborhood centers, hired Woolpert for a full complement of redevelopment services at Ellisville Square in Ellisville, Mo.

Woolpert created a new architectural design for the building exterior as well as a reconfiguration of the structural, mechanical, electrical, civil and underground utility components within Kmart’s 87,000-square-foot portion of the 150,000-square-foot shopping center.

The firm’s comprehensive design package also included interior build-out documents for each new tenant and a site landscaping plan.

“Woolpert’s comprehensive architectural design and engineering services took the project from initial concepts to final design and engineering,” said Jeff Slavish, Brixmor’s project manager. “Their one-stop-shop approach streamlined the process for us as the client and made the transition between project phases efficient and seamless.”

Brixmor has signed lease agreements with Sports Authority, Michaels and Party City for the space.

"We are skilled in helping retail landlords repurpose vacant space into dynamic shopping environments, to breathe new life into the facilities that are creating challenges for communities across the country,” said James Goggan, Woolpert’s program director. “By blending our firm’s engineering and architectural design expertise, Woolpert is able to provide building owners an efficient redevelopment approach that generates employment, tax revenues and convenient services for a community. We’re proud to be part of this revitalization effort.”

Brixmor projected the new stores to open in the third quarter of 2015.
