Meridian Associates, Inc., a Land Surveying, Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture firm, announces the completion of Principal Donald E. Bowen’s Net Zero House project.
Beverly, MA – January 21, 2015 – The primary objectives of the design process included net-zero energy (non-negotiable), sustainable design practices which include salvaged or re-purposed materials, recycled content of new materials and a substantial reduction in waste generated by the construction process. The procurement of local labor and the purchase of locally sourced materials and equipment wherever possible were also important.
From the start, Bowen was unwilling to ‘offset’ the use of any carbon based fuel such as propane using renewable energy, in this case solar PV, as he was determined to be carbon-free in the goal to be net-zero. Thermal performance of the building envelope, uncompromising commitment to LED lighting and electrical efficiency of equipment and appliances powered with solar PV to achieve net-zero energy (and likely net-surplus) was the basis of the design constraints.
