NATO HQ Launches Interactive Web Map Based on Esri Technology

People Can Now Easily View NATO Activities, Operations, Partners, Video, and More

Redlands, California—June 2, 2014—The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has just released “NATO on Duty,” an interactive, multi-media web map based on Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) software.

“The purpose of the map is to illustrate to the general public the wide-range of NATO’s work, both in terms of geography and in terms of the activities we carry out,” says Pino Nobile, Geo Section head at NATO headquarters. “Relatively few people understand how complex, widespread, and active NATO is across many different fields. The map is intended to show them in a simple, and graphic way what NATO does, and why we do it.”

Esri’s ArcGIS Online web platform and NATO data were used to develop this easy-to-use map. The map includes NATO’s current operations, missions, and allies & partners, as well as video highlights, and feature stories about NATO members. NATO on Duty also details the organization’s command structure.

“We chose ArcGIS for our NATO on Duty web map application for public internet use because it offers the best, and more efficient frameworks to ensure rapid and accurate development,” concludes Nobile.
