Harrisburg, PA, February 26, 2014: Dawood Engineering, Inc. (Dawood) is proud to announce that we have received a 2014 American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) Diamond Award. Dawood’s project submission was the emergency replacement of the southern span of the bridge carrying SR 0011 (Spruce Street) over the ramp to the Central Scranton Expressway in the Borough of Scranton, Lackawanna County, PA. Fahs Construction Group (Fahs) from Binghamton, New York partnered with Dawood for this fast-paced emergency project, which won the ACEC/PA Diamond Award in the Small Projects Category.
On November 2, 2012, an over-height load struck every beam of the southern span of the Spruce Street Bridge over the ramp to the Central Scranton Expressway, rendering the bridge incapable of carrying vehicular traffic. As a result, the bridge was closed to traffic, impacting 15,000 vehicles daily. The project is situated at one of South Scranton’s primary thoroughfares into the downtown. In less than three months, Dawood worked directly with Fahs and PennDOT District 4-0 to produce an approved structure plan, roadway plan and a traffic control plan, including a temporary signal plan. Despite these challenges, the design was completed and ready for construction within 3 months. Additionally, Dawood’s traffic control plan allowed for the reduction of construction stages for an adjacent bridge replacement project from seven phases to three. The bridge re-opened to traffic just 11 months after the incident. Through close collaboration between Dawood, the District and the contractor, the inconvenience to the public and the impact of this emergency were greatly shortened.
