ZEB1 Mobile Mapper Launched in Brazil

Nottingham, UK, 18 October 2013 – CPE Technology, a Brazilian geotechnology company, has purchased the regions first ZEB1 mobile mapping system. The world’s first truly mobile, hand held rapid laser mapping system the ZEB1 system will be presented to potential users active in the fields of underground mining, construction and government agencies with responsibility for national heritage.

“Brazil is the world’s fifth largest country with a rich geology and wide variety of mineral deposits. Occupying forty seven per cent of South America it is a diverse country of continental dimensions,” commented Rogerio Neves, CEO at CPE Technology. “Conventional terrestrial laser scanners can present high system costs and complicated working practices for some applications. We therefore predict a huge potential for a system like ZEB1 which has lower costs and is easy to use.”

“The newly launched data logger developed by 3D Laser Mapping makes the ZEB1 even more appealing for use in inaccessible environments such as thousands of caves and cavities that have yet to be mapped in Brazil,” continued Neves, “making it perfectly feasible for a single operator to carry out a full days surveying underground.”

Developed by CSIRO and commercialised by UK based 3D Laser Mapping, ZEB1 uses robotic technology called Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM). The ZEB1 system includes a lightweight laser scanner mounted on a simple spring mechanism, which continuously scans as the operator walks through the environment. As the scanner loosely oscillates about a spring it produces a rotation that converts 2D laser measurements into 3D fields of view. Its ability to self-localise makes ZEB1 ideally suited for use indoors, underground and in other covered environments where traditional solutions that utilise GPS don’t function well.
