Trimble eCognition 8.9 Provides Mobile Mapping Users with Powerful Analysis Capabilities

Sunnyvale, Calif., Sept. 16, 2013—Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) introduced today a new version of its eCognition® geospatial analysis software that enables images, point clouds and vectors to be integrated and analyzed to quantify features or detect change. eCognition version 8.9 offers new functions for automated information extraction from geospatial data collected with mobile mapping solutions. This allows geospatial service providers and transportation authorities to more efficiently use mobile mapping data.

eCognition 8.9 introduces information-rich derivative attributes created by fusing 3D point cloud information directly within 2D image pixels. This overcomes the perspective distortions inherent within 2D imagery, enabling true structure and position-based calculations. The enriched 2D analysis environment is familiar and less computing intensive in comparison to working directly within enormous point clouds collected by mobile sensors. Extracting 3D information from 2D images provides an intuitive interface that increases efficiency and helps decision makers better analyze and derive data-driven results. For example, pavement markings and the edge of roads may be better analyzed from above while road signs or light poles are preferably analyzed from the side. eCognition 8.9 allows objects to be analyzed from the most advantageous perspective, which can provide more accurate classification results faster.

"Trimble’s eCognition software is a powerful solution for analysis and extraction of information from geospatial data collected by aerial, satellite and mobile mapping platforms,” said Alain Samaha, business area director of Trimble’s Geospatial Software Solutions Division. “The latest update expands the performance with mobile mapping data, allowing customers to visualize and extract information more quickly, which can reduce project time and costs."

Availability
eCognition 8.9 software is available now through Trimble’s eCognition distribution channels. Customers with a valid maintenance contract for eCognition will receive the upgrade.
