Former Remote Sensing Expert at Anglo American, DeBeers and Shell International Exploration and Production B.V. to lead new Global Geoscience Solutions business for Spatial Energy
Boulder, Colorado, USA, May 18, 2011 – Spatial Energy, the leading source for digital imagery, data management and remote sensing services for the energy industry, today announced the appointment of Dr. Richard Eyers to the newly created position of Vice President, Global Geoscience Solutions.
Based in the U.K., Eyers will lead the newly formed global geoscience consulting business unit responsible for providing all analytical and interpretation services to the Global Energy and Mining markets. He will also be responsible for identifying and managing partnership activities worldwide to accelerate Spatial Energy’s leadership position for remote sensing in the energy sector. Eyers may be reached at 1-303-800-4243 or reyers@spatialenergy.com.
“We are delighted to have a remote sensing specialist of Richard’s caliber join our organization. Richard has been a leader in the application of earth observation and remote sensing for hydrocarbon exploration for many years. He was early to embrace the benefits of using satellite imagery and analysis for oil and gas companies and we look to his leadership to advance new techniques, services and products for remote sensing in the Energy sector,” said Bud Pope, Spatial Energy President. “Richard is an innovator in how global companies collect, manage and utilize spatial information to help achieve its business goals and we’re confident in his leadership to develop innovative analytical offerings for Spatial on Demand as well as value-added products for our customers” said Pope.
“Spatial Energy is an industry leader in reducing the complexity and cost of acquiring and managing earth observation data and services to the energy sector," said Richard Eyers, Spatial Energy Vice President, Global Geoscience Solutions. "I’m delighted to be given the mandate to expand the remote sensing applications and analytical offerings of the company, and the opportunity to research and commercialize new techniques, strategies and products. Remote sensing solutions support energy companies in managing and reducing health and safety risks and making more effective decisions in their exploration and production operations." said Eyers.
Eyers originally trained as a geologist at Imperial College, London and gained a PhD in remote sensing from the University of Newcastle in 2006. After graduating he worked on a number of short contracts supporting mineral exploration in Africa before joining Anglo American, and subsequently DeBeers in Johannesburg, South Africa, working as a remote sensing geologist processing and interpreting airborne scanner and satellite imagery. From there he moved to a contract role with Shell in Nigeria, working as a remote sensing specialist providing environmental and geological services, as well as supporting and training local staff.
Eyers left his role as Principal Technical Expert for Remote Sensing at Shell International Exploration and Production B.V. to join Spatial Energy. In Shell he was leading a global network of Remote Sensing professionals and, as a member of Shell’s GIS Technical Advisory Panel, steering the group strategy for raster management, including acquisition and licensing.
He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and chairs the Geological Remote Sensing Group, an international group working to further the development and application of earth observation for geological applications.
