Aerial Cartographics of America (ACA) Purchases New RIEGL LMS-Q680i Full Waveform LiDAR System

Orlando, Florida, 17 May 2010 – Aerial Cartographics of America (ACA), headquartered in Orlando, has purchased the new 400 kHz RIEGL LMS-Q680i Long Range Airborne Laser Scanner with ‘Full Waveform’ technology. The new system is installed and is providing superior results on ACA’s LiDAR projects.

“We are excited to have the full waveform laser pulse technology as part of our current LiDAR services,” said Jim Humphrey, President of ACA. “The ability to record multiple returns in highly vegetated areas is a must, especially with Florida’s dense vegetation environment. With ACA’s technical approach, we will penetrate into the vegetation and reach the ground for surface measurement better than anyone in the mapping business.”

The 400 kHz system has an effective rate of 266,000 LiDAR point measurements at the ground level. The Q680i combines advanced digital signal processing with a high performance LiDAR engine.

“The combination allows the user to benefit from the high pulse rate at higher flight altitudes while achieving increased densities with better measurement accuracy on the ground," said Dr. Andreas Ullrich, RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems CTO.

Having a 60° field-of-view capability enables fewer flight lines than other systems on the market.  The LMS-Q680i is best suited for heavily vegetated areas, flood plain, coastal shorelines, power line corridors, transportation, rail & pipeline corridors, and 3D city modeling.

“We are pleased to have ACA as an owner of the very first LMSQ-680i. ACA is well known for providing precision mapping products, and they will integrate the Q680i’s advanced capabilities to provide the very best LiDAR mapping results,” said Jim Van Rens, President of Riegl USA, Orlando, Fla.

ACA’s Cessna Grand Caravan 208 is now equipped with a Vexcel UCX Large Format Digital Mapping Camera and the new LMS-Q680i Full Wave Form LiDAR Sensor. With just a single mobilization, ACA can acquire both imagery and LiDAR data at one time at a single altitude in one flight line, providing an important cost savings to its customers.
