SIS Announces Availability of White Paper “Image Accuracy Checkpoint Collection Guide”

Starkville, Miss., 7 October 2009 — Spatial Information Solutions, Inc. (SIS), announces the availability of “Image Accuracy Checkpoint Collection Guide.” This white paper uses text, pictures and a table to address a series of topics:
• Introduction to photogrammetry
• Ground control points and ground checkpoints
• Photogrammetric targets
    • What is a photogrammetry target?
    • What does a photogrammetry target look like?
    • What are the dimensions of photogrammetry targets?
    • Where should survey points be placed?
    • What if photogrammetric targets are not available?
• Photo-identified points

The 15-page document, available for download free from http://www.spatialis.com/pdf/Image_Accuracy_Checkpoint_Collection_Guide_V1.1.pdf, includes ground photos and aerial images of example ground checkpoints, and more than a dozen references for readers who want more information. The authors are Ashley Sedorovich, Manager of Field Data Collection at SIS; Karen Schuckman, Senior Lecturer in Geography at Penn State; and Dr. Charles O’Hara, President of SIS.

“Surveyed checkpoint locations are both useful and reusable. Federal agencies, data producers, states, counties, state agencies like DOT’s, local government, and other users can follow these guidelines to build highly accurate libraries of checkpoint locations,” said Dr. Chuck O’Hara, President of SIS. He continued, “Such libraries are useful for many vital mapping needs. The time and cost of collecting these points really pays dividends when the checkpoint data are used year-after-year to ensure the quality of important and costly photography, map data, and products.”
