Fugro EarthData, Inc., has been awarded two contracts for high accuracy elevation mapping over parts of South America. With a combined value of USD 13 million, the contracts will be completed using Fugro’s exclusive GeoSAR airborne radar mapping system and are funded by the U.S. government.
The new awards continue Fugro EarthData’s prior work in the region. Since 2002, the company has mapped over 700,000 square kilometres worldwide using GeoSAR. Data acquisition for the current mapping contracts is now underway; final deliverables are scheduled for July and October 2010 and will be used to update existing topographic maps in support of regional land management activities. As with previous contracts, Fugro EarthData is coordinating with South American government agencies to complete the mapping projects.
GeoSAR is a one-of-a-kind airborne radar mapping system that collects dual-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IFSAR) data through clouds and dense foliage over large project areas. Unhampered by weather or land-cover conditions, GeoSAR’s X- and P-band orthorectified image and digital elevation model (DEM) data enable efficient topographic and thematic mapping in equatorial regions.
