Rochester, N.Y., September 3, 2008-ITT Corporation today announced that its Airborne Natural Gas Emission LIDAR (ANGEL) Services has been chosen by Omaha-based Northern Natural Gas (NNG) to perform pipeline leak surveys and corridor monitoring work in New Mexico, Texas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas and Michigan. The contract also includes a new application of ITT’s ANGEL Services: aerial leak surveys and mapping of NNG’s 30,000-acre Cunningham, Kansas, storage field, which has a peak capacity of 62 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Since 2006, ITT’s ANGEL Services has flown and collected over 3,000 miles of pipeline leak surveys and corridor mapping imagery for NNG, from the Permian Basin in Texas to the upper Midwest. More than 30 unaccounted-for pipeline leaks and facility emissions have been detected, including multiple underground pipeline leaks.
"ANGEL Services is one of the best technology solutions we’ve found in a number of years," said Jeff Cullison, regional pipeline specialist at NNG. "We plan to use this service annually and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone in the gas industry."
"Northern Natural Gas is a progressive energy company that knows the efficiency and safety of their pipelines and storage facilities are crucial to their success," said Daniel Brake, director of ANGEL Services at ITT Space Systems Division. "As such, they recognize that any gas leak equates to a reduction in safety and profits, as well as avoidable greenhouse gas emissions."
ITT’s ANGEL Services utilizes differential absorption lidar (DIAL) laser technology to effectively and efficiently pinpoint natural gas pipeline leaks that current industry and regulatory best practices are not finding. ITT can leak survey up to 1,000 miles per day while guaranteeing a minimum of 99% pipeline centerline leak survey coverage. Customer deliverables include GIS datasets of leak survey results and orthomosaic mapping imagery. For more information visit www.ssd.itt.com/angel or call (585) 269-5121.
