PBSJ Foundation Announces Minority Scholarships for 2007

Program supports minority students pursuing degrees in civil, environmental engineering

Tampa, FL – In what has become an annual event, The PBSJ Foundation, Inc. has partnered with universities around the country to provide scholarships for minority students. The scholarships, earmarked for those enrolled in university-level civil and environmental engineering programs, will be given to qualified students through a competitive process.

In announcing the 2007 scholarships, Clarence Anthony, PBSJ Foundation board member, described the program as both helpful to minorities, and critical to the future of the engineering profession. "Engineering and construction firms have an incredible opportunity to address some of the serious infrastructure and environmental issues that face us today. One of our biggest challenges, however, may lie in trying to attract young minorities to our professions as we work to build a sustainable future," Anthony says.

The following universities have been named 2007 minority scholarship partners by The PBSJ Foundation, Inc.:
• The University of Maryland
• Florida A&M University
• The University of Nevada, Las Vegas
• The University of Florida
• The Georgia Institute of Technology
• The University of South Florida Foundation
• North Carolina State University

Upon meeting the program criteria, scholarship recipients are selected through a competitive process—only one student from each university partner can be awarded the scholarship each year. A selection committee composed of local PBS&J’s technical management and human resources personnel chooses the recipient. Since the program’s inception in 1993, nearly 150 scholarships have been awarded, with funds being used to defray the cost of tuition.
