Optech’s Founder, Dr. Allan Carswell, appointed to the Order of Canada

Toronto, Ontario, September 1, 2005 – Optech Incorporated, the global leader in the development and manufacture of laser-based survey instruments, is pleased to announce that Dr. Allan Carswell, Founder and Chairman of Optech Incorporated, has been awarded the Order of Canada for his continuing contributions to Science in Canada.

The Order of Canada is the highest civilian award a Canadian can receive and is given only to those who have made outstanding contributions in their field of endeavor.   Dr. Carswell’s appointment to the Order of Canada took effect June 29 and he will receive his medal at an induction ceremony at the Governor-General’s residence in Ottawa, Ontario.  Dr. Allan Carswell is professor emeritus in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in York University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Dr. Carswell is an internationally recognized leader in laser radar (lidar) applications, a field in which he has been working since its very beginnings in the early 1960s. He founded Optech Incorporated in 1974 to develop commercial systems based on lidar technology. He has led and managed the growth of Optech, expanding it from its base in atmospheric lidar 31 years ago to its current position as a leading developer and manufacturer of commercial lidar systems for a wide and growing range of applications.
