The American Surveyor

John R. & Lynda D. Fenn Digital Photogrammetry and GIS Laboratory at Ferris State University

Dear Friends:

I am writing to let you know about an excellent opportunity for advancing the future of the Surveying profession.

On April 1, 2005 my wife Lynda and I dedicated the John R. and Lynda D. Fenn Digital Photogrammetry and GIS Laboratory at Ferris State University. The lab is equipped with 15 stations designed exclusively to serve the needs of students in digital photogrammetry and GIS. Loaded with the revolutionary technology of Leica Photogrammetry Suite and Leica High-Definition Surveying systems (all courtesy of Leica Geosystems), and ESRI’s ArcGIS 9.0 software, future students will have a distinctive advantage within the industry. This lab is the only one of its kind at the university and it will touch the lives of all those who choose surveying engineering as a career path for as long as Ferris State University exists.

My wife and I are neither alumni nor faculty of Ferris, but surveying has been both my career and my life, and it has been good to my family and me. We don’t believe there’s a school in the nation that can surpass Ferris in teaching our profession. For this reason, I personally challenge you, and all surveying professionals, to contribute to Ferris State University’s Digital Photogrammetry and GIS Laboratory. The funds will be used to update the lab through the purchase of equipment and other materials vital to providing an exceptional learning environment for surveying engineering students. To add to the already compelling motivation to contribute to the future of our profession, I will also match every gift made to the laboratory up to $10,000 in the next year.

Please consider my request and share with me this wonderful opportunity to support the education of future surveying engineering professionals. You may send your tax deductible contributions to this very important initiative to:
