Cutting edge technology developed in Brisbane will soon be exported around the world to transform the mining and construction industries.
A world leader in geospatial technology with a $A800 million annual turnover globally, Swiss-based Leica Geosystems, has chosen Brisbane as the home of its global research and development headquarters for machine automation solutions.

Queensland is the stand-out choice
Global president of Leica Geosystems’ Surveying and Engineering Division Mr Clement Woon, said the Brisbane headquarters would drive Leica Geosystems’ expansion plans for Machine Automation.
“We could have chosen anywhere in the world for this site, but Queensland was the stand-out choice,” Mr Woon said. “Queensland’s reputation for innovation and investment in technology, and this state’s highly skilled workforce, were key drivers in our decision. Queensland is also a key hub for mining and construction activity in the southern hemisphere.”
Opening Ceremony attended by Prime Minister John Howard
The new centre was officially opened by The Hon John Howard MP, Prime Minister of Australia, in a ceremony on 17 May. It will be the largest research and development centre in Australia for geospatial technology solutions for the mining and construction industries.
Leica Geosystems expects to inject in excess of $A20 million into the Queensland economy over the coming years as it doubles its current workforce to meet demand for its technology.
Mr Woon said industries were becoming more and more reliant on automated machinery, creating an unprecedented demand for accuracy. “From the lasers responsible for putting together the A380, the world’s largest commercial airplane, to technology that makes mining and construction more efficient, Leica Geosystems’ products are used in almost every industry,” he said.
Brisbane sets the standard
Mr Woon said the Brisbane centre would literally set the standard for the future of the mining and construction industries. “The technology developed in the Brisbane office has the potential to transform industries, increase productivity and save corporations millions of dollars.”
Leica Geosystems products are used in the operations of some of the biggest names in the world such as BHP, Rio Tinto, Anglo Coal, and Xstrata, as well as most of the world’s construction companies.
Leica Geosystems already operates in markets within Australia as well as in the US, South Africa and around the world and plans to expand into the developing markets in China, India and Southern Asia.
