USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Standardizes on Leica Photogrammetry Suite

Atlanta, Georgia, USA — 4 October 2004 – Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping, LLC today announced the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has chosen Leica Photogrammetry Suite (LPS) as a key resource to support and streamline the National Resources Inventory. This landmark procurement establishes LPS as the premier software tool for large-scale orthorectification, mosaicking and other photogrammetric applications.

The National Resources Inventory (NRI) is a continuous survey that serves as the Federal government’s principal source of information on the status, condition and trends of soil, water and related resources on private lands in the United States. Data are collected using aerial photography and supplemented by onsite field investigation.

“The NRCS acquires and processes approximately seventy thousand images each year. Prior to utilizing LPS, NRCS conducted its measurements of these images by hand on a light table,” commented Jerry Harlow, NRI Program Manager, NRCS. “LPS automates this process and helps to ensure consistency of measurement and speedy change detection. Ultimately, this automation will produce a significant cost savings over the lifespan of the NRI.”

The NRCS has recently completed a reorganization, through which it centralized image processing to three Remote Sensing Laboratories (RSLs): Greensboro, North Carolina; Fort Worth, Texas; and Portland, Oregon.

“The NRI data is essential in legislative and land planning decision making, so the NRCS must have a photogrammetric solution that produces accurate results quickly. In choosing LPS, the NRCS is benefiting from the streamlined workflows and intuitive solutions for complex photogrammetric tasks offered by LPS,” said Richard McKay, Vice President of Sales for Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping. “We are pleased to have NRCS join our growing client roster of innovative organizations standardizing on LPS.”
