Cavell Elected NSPS/ACSM Fellow

J. Anthony (Tony) Cavell of the Louisiana State University Center for Geoinformatics was recently elected a fellow of the National Society of Professional Surveyors & American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, an honor reserved for less than one-half percent of the membership. Cavell currently serves as the NSPS Governor from Louisiana, as Secretary of the Board of Governors and on the NSPS Standards Committee. He is a past president of the Louisiana Society of Professional Surveyors.

Cavell is Associate Director of the LSU C4G, with responsibility for maintaining the GULFNet geodetic network and developing new technology and surveying standards for Louisiana and its citizens. Since re-joining LSU in 2004, Cavell has been instrumental in helping the surveying, mapping and geodesy profession by integrating the Global Positioning System, and implementing new mapping technology in both the government and private sectors.

In addition to his LSU and NSPS positions, Cavell is a contributor to the American Surveyor and frequently presents seminars on GPS and many other topics to surveyors, the public and government groups across the country and even as far as Saudi Arabia. Before joining the LSU C4G in 2004, Cavell’s career included professional consulting, executive stints including CEO of a prominent Louisiana vendor, offshore surveying all after getting his start in surveying in the New Orleans area.

Cavell, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, held Physics as his first interest but found kindred spirits in the ancient field of surveying. A little study in geodesy under LSU Instructor Cliff Mugnier then at University of New Orleans, confirmed his interest in the field. He currently resides in Baton Rouge, La.
