Jacksonville, Fla. (March 9, 2009) More than 50 girls from local troops of the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council will join with surveyors and mappers from Clary & Associates at Memorial Park on Riverside Avenue from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 11 to learn more about what goes into mapping properties and to earn a badge through their participation.
The Clary & Associates Survey Badge Event teaches young girls the importance of math and geometry in surveying properties. The event has been sponsored annually by the Jacksonville-based surveying and mapping firm since 2007.
“Fewer women are studying in the areas of math and science when they get to college, and this event introduces the girls to math in a fun way that could even lead them into a career in the survey and mapping field,” said Terri Ketchum, a program manager with Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, Inc.
The scouts will go to several stations set up at the park during the event, where Clary employees will introduce them to the history of surveying, how GPS systems are used, measuring distances and topography, safety in the field, and how elements of math and science are used by survey firms.
Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, Inc. serves 25,000 members, including more than 18,000 and 7,000 adults, in 16 Florida counties including the First Coast. For more information contact 904-388-4653 or visit www.girlscouts-gateway.org
