This is an invitation to the Great Lakes public meeting of the NOAA Hydrographic Services Review Panel, Federal Advisory Committee, August 30 to September 1, 2016. The meeting will be at the City Club of Cleveland, 850 Euclid Avenue, suite 200, Cleveland, Ohio. The HSRP is a Federal Advisory Committee that provides the NOAA Administrator with independent advice on improving the quality, efficiency, and usefulness of NOAA’s navigation-related products, data and services. The meeting is a public forum where product and service users will identify areas that need improvement and consider future ideas and planning. The highlights are the opening session and two special sessions listed below on "Great Lakes Navigation Challenges" and "Hydrographic Services: The Foundation of Great Lakes Water Resources Management and Restoration".

Stakeholders, partners, students and the public are encouraged to participate in person, via webinar, or to contribute with written comments. Great Lakes Navigation Challenges:

Challenges facing the Great Lakes ports, waterways and the Saint Lawrence Seaway can benefit from NOAA’s navigational, positioning, and coastal data. The panelists will explore NOAA’s “next generation” of navigation service solutions in the Great Lakes context. The Great Lakes marine transportation system – involving the world’s largest system of surface freshwater – has unique navigational challenges, including environmental performance, seasonal system availability, water level variability, and surface transportation congestion. The panelists will examine how NOAA navigation services and products can help address these challenges, as well as the broader issues involving infrastructure, dredging, expansion of maritime tourism, and waterway management.

Hydrographic Services: The Foundation of Great Lakes Water Resources Management and Restoration

The Great Lakes region faces unique challenges in water resources management and environmental restoration.  The dynamic nature of the climate and earth’s crust require state-of-the-science hydrographic services to provide the foundation for lake regulation, water balance accounting, navigation and sediment dredging and environmental restoration of the nearshore.  This panel will examine these challenges and discuss potential measures for improvement of services.
