Geospatial Summit Meeting – April 13-14, 2015

NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS) plans to host a Geospatial Summit on April 13-14, 2015, at the Crystal City Hilton in Arlington, VA. At the Geospatial Summit, NGS will provide updates regarding the planned replacement of the two primary geodetic datums: the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). The summit will be an opportunity for federal and state agencies, as well other constituents, to share their comments, questions and concerns regarding the new geometric and geopotential datums, which are planned to be published in 2022.

This event will be part of a larger conference organized by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) and in partnership with the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS). NGS will also host a Federal Geodetic Control Subcommittee Meeting and a National Height Modernization Partner Meeting on April 14 at the same location.

NGS has created a web page for information about the events it is hosting:

General conference and hotel information is available through the NSPS conference web site: www.surveyingandmapping.net . Registration will be available at the site soon. There will be no charge to attend the NGS hosted events, but registration is required and there will be fees for the larger NSPS and MAPPS hosted meetings. The sessions will be at the Hilton Crystal City hotel in Arlington, VA, where a block of hotel rooms has been reserved, and there are many other hotels nearby.

A brief description of the NGS events are below:

At the Geospatial Summit, NGS will provide updates regarding the planned replacement of its two primary geodetic datums: the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). The summit will be an opportunity for federal and state agencies, as well other constituents, to share their comments, questions and concerns regarding the new geometric and geopotential datums, which are planned to be published in 2022.

The Federal Geodetic Control Subcommittee’s Quarterly Meeting is a venue for federal agencies to coordinate and plan the execution of geodetic surveys, the development of related standards and specifications, and the exchange of other technical information. This meeting will be open to the public and is an opportunity to hear how federal agencies are exercising their responsibilities to address today’s surveying and mapping issues.

Finally, the annual National Height Modernization Program Partner Meeting allows state and university partners to explain the best practices they develop and challenges they encounter when determining accurate heights in their local regions or communities. The meeting is also an opportunity for stakeholders to express their requirements as NGS continues to develop geodetic models and tools in preparation for the replacement of NAD 83 and NAVD 88.

Please use this information to begin making your travel plans, and we hope that you can join us in April. We plan to make remote attendance possible, through a combination of teleconferencing and webinars. Further updates will be sent out when registration is available and closer to the event. Please forward to others who may want to participate. If you have additional questions about these NGS events, please contact us at: NGS.GeospatialSummit@noaa.gov
