Founded in 1953 by Erick O. Schonstedt, Schonstedt Instrument Company was initially a subcontractor to the aerospace industry, providing high-grade magnetometers for aerospace and laboratory applications. The firm began making magnetic locators for land surveyors in the 1970s, and the distinctive ‘yellow stick’ soon became the global standard for survey monument location. In fact, in the survey industry, ‘Schonstedt’ or ‘Schonny’ is the de facto term for magnetic locators. Also in the 1970s, Schonstedt began producing utility locators and today the company provides handheld utility locators to water, gas, electrical and telecommunications industries worldwide.
