Woolpert designed the shelters of the Clermont County (Ohio) Park District site to honor the park’s namesake.
Milford, Ohio (May 31, 2018) — Ground was broken today at Shor Park, signifying that the Clermont County Park District’s $1.3 million improvement project is underway. The 56-acre park is at 4659 Tealtown Road in Milford, east of Cincinnati.
Woolpert created the master plan and is providing comprehensive architecture and engineering services for the project, which will include two picnic shelters, new walking trails, a playground, two raingardens, ample parking and a windmill, which also will serve as a wind turbine to generate power for the park.
James Dobrozsi, Woolpert architect and project manager, said the shelters were designed to reflect the interests of S. David Shor, for whom the park is named.
“We knew that Mr. Shor raised racehorses and that the animals were a big part of his life, so we incorporated a design to reflect that and honor him and his family,” Dobrozsi said. “The design reflects architectural features of Kentucky Horse Park and Churchill Downs, as indicated with the materials, the barrel vaults and cupola.”
Sylvia Shor donated the land for the park to the district in 2003 in honor of her late husband. Mr. Shor founded Duro Bag Manufacturing Co., whose clients have included Bloomingdale’s, McDonald’s and Kroger Co. Mr. Shor was a graduate of Ohio State University, where he was a member of the polo team, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Shor Park is one of six parks operated by the Clermont County Park District, which also manages three nature preserves. Part of the district’s mission is to secure the preservation of open space and places of scenic or historic value in the county for residents and nonresidents. This improvement project supports that mission.
“This is an exciting project for us,” said Park District Director Chris Clingman. “We’re glad to be working with Woolpert and getting this job underway. Shor Park has been popular with our guests since we dedicated it in 2010 and we’re glad to make it even better for the community.”
Board of Park Commissioners Chairman Bill Stearns added that this is the Clermont County Park District’s first big building project since its levy passed in November 2016.
“We’re pleased the voters gave us this opportunity and pleased to start this work at Shor Park,” Stearns said. “We’re also looking forward to seeing more improvements across the entire Park District.”
Perkins/Carmack Construction is the contractor for this project, which is scheduled to be completed in November.
