Mobexx Launches Rugged Windows Tablet for Hazardous Environment Mobile GIS

Chester, UK, 12 November 2014 – Rugged mobile computing specialist Mobexx has introduced a new slimline 10-inch MIL-STD-810G, IP-65 tested Windows 8.1 Professional tablet PC. With front and back facing cameras, a powerful, energy efficient 1.9 GHz quad-core processor, the tablet has one of the best rugged, backlit IPS LCD screens available in an industrial grade device. Available with a range of connectivity and data capture options, the Xplore Bobcat tablet is ideal for outdoor mapping, surveying, inspections and other mobile GIS applications.

The ATEX/IECEx Zone 2/22 certified Xplore Bobcat pushes the boundaries in tablet PC design, features and functionality for explosive atmospheres and hazardous environments such as oil, gas and petrochemical sites, mines, ports and certain manufacturing sites.

Mark Dale-Lace, Mobexx Director, says “The Bobcat truly punches above its weight – literally, as it only weighs just over 1 kg. The premium, fully environmentally sealed casing and magnesium alloy midframe allows the unit to withstand 1.52-metre drops (1.2-metre with accessories installed), keeping the software and system running and not missing a beat. As a mobile platform, the Bobcat is the whole package for mobile workers in all kinds of hostile environments, including explosive and hazardous. Plus, the long battery life ensures full eight-hour shifts, with the option of a hot swappable external battery that will give an extra six hours – making it possible to run the device virtually nonstop for up to 14 hours if necessary.”

Product highlights include comprehensive standard input and output features (RS 232, RJ45, two full size USB 3.0 ports, and micro SD and SIM slots – option to use 4G LTE for fast mobile communications), WiFi, Bluetooth and optional 1D and 2D barcode scanners, and options to add an access card reader, fingerprint scanner and NFC (near field communications). Equipped with a 128 GB solid state drive (SSD) for secure storage of applications and data with fast boot up, the Bobcat’s storage can be upgraded to 256 GB – again using an SSD (and further expanded up to 128GB using the micro SDXC slot). The outdoor viewable multi-touch display adapts to inside and outside use instantly so that walking in and out of the shade of buildings and plant does not affect visibility of the screen. Carrying straps, handles and mobile docking station options are available too.

Mark Dale-Lace adds, “The Bobcat in common with other Xplore products is designed for long service life and comes with a standard three-year warranty. As it runs full Windows 8.1 and can be used with Windows 7 too, integration with legacy software is straightforward. We believe this to be a very compelling product for any application where a light and slim 10-inch device that offers superior ruggedness and reliability is essential. The entire Mobexx product range is carefully selected for suitability and value and for us the Bobcat is the best of the breed in this category of device.”
