Presentation by Leica Honors Aworth’s 50 Years in Survey

The leading manufacturer Leica Geosystems has presented a piece of heritage equipment, to Aworth Survey Consultants, to mark the company’s 50 years in the business of survey.

A surprise presentation of a specially engraved Wild /Leica Zenith & Nadir optical plummet, circa 1963, was made to Aworth’s managing director John Witherden during a group discussion meeting of The Survey Association (TSA) at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

Leica Geosystems’ UK direct sales manager Tim Badley, who made the presentation, said, “It is a great pleasure to be able to congratulate John personally on successfully leading Aworth to their 50th year and to wish them many more years of success. It seemed altogether appropriate to present Aworth Survey Consultants with a piece of Wild/ Leica survey history to mark this milestone.”

John, a council member of TSA, joined Aworth Land Surveys in 1975 as a trainee, straight from school. The business had been established in 1963 by John Aworth, who gave the school leaver his first job.

John Witherden continued to develop his career in various roles within the business, the promotion to MD coming in 1999. Aworth Survey Consultants are based in Uckfield, Sussex and have a London office in Croydon.

John Witherden said, “The Wild/Leica name has been an integral part of my working life. Whilst advances in technology have made the collection, processing and editing of survey data more efficient, optical instruments, such as the ZNL are design classics and this will have pride of place in our office.”

Topographical and cadastral survey data produced by Aworth Survey Consultants underpins many of the capital’s iconic modern developments. Current projects are diverse and include: the lettable area measurement of Bluewater’s retail units; surveying at Liverpool Street Station of track alignment and structure for the proposed new design works, and topographical data for Europe’s largest logistics park, DP World’s London Gateway – the £1.5bn infrastructure project comprising 1,500 acres.
