Irish Geomatics Student Wins Big in Las Vegas!

Generous gift of Trimble’s next-generation R10 GNSS for Dublin Institute of Technology

KOREC is delighted to announce that thanks to recent graduate, David Hyland, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), was presented today with a gift of Trimble’s next-generation R10 GNSS for use by its students of geomatics and spatial information. David won the International Trimble Dimensions 2012 Student Paper Competition. The prize included a trip to Las Vegas to present his paper at Trimble’s Dimensions 2012 conference, and a donation of the Trimble R10 for his home institution.

Sean Higgins, one of KOREC’s Surveying Solutions Consultants based in Dublin explained that the purpose of the Trimble University Program is to develop and maintain strong relationships between colleges such as DIT Bolton Street and Trimble and its distributors. The Program assists the educational process by making Trimble products available at special discounted prices, and providing a high level of training and technical support.

Anthony Mills of Trimble Navigation Europe Ltd, who travelled to Dublin to make the presentation to DIT, said “The student competition is an opportunity for Trimble to engage with the next generation of surveyors internationally. I’m delighted that the premier surveying institution in Ireland was successful on this occasion, with a very strong entry from David.”

The Trimble R10 GNSS is the company’s latest precision instrument, designed to be light and durable, providing surveyors with fast accurate measurements in all terrains, including where there is limited connectivity. It is the first of its kind to be delivered in Ireland.

Accepting the gift on behalf of DIT and the Department of Spatial Information Services, Professor Brian Norton, President of DIT, said “The desire for information about location and place in three dimensions is advancing at a rapid pace. As the only provider in Ireland of undergraduate education in geomatics, surveying and geographical systems, it is really important for our students in DIT to keep abreast of the latest technology in their field. We are very grateful to Trimble for this generous gift, and very proud of our recent graduate David Hyland who made this happen through winning the 2012 International Trimble Student competition!”

David Hyland, from Co. Cork, is the first Irish person to win the prestigious competition. David was flown to Las Vegas last November to attend the Trimble Dimensions 2012 Conference where he presented his innovative work on An Assessment of Ocean Tide Loading on Network RTK and Mitigation Methods in Ireland. The technology conference attracts more than 3500 participants, and includes presentations from professionals and academics on how new technology can transform architecture and design, construction and infrastructure, mapping and GIS, mining, positioning, surveying, utilities and energy.

David’s competition entry was based on his final year thesis, supervised by Dr. Audrey Martin FSCSI FRICS in the Department of Spatial Information Sciences at DIT. Adding her thanks to Trimble and to David, Dr. Martin said “This was the first time a student from DIT has entered this competition and while David was an undergraduate, the competition was also open to postgraduate students. We are really proud of his achievement and although David has graduated, this piece of equipment will be of huge value to current students of Geomatics at DIT.”

David carried out his very detailed research into ocean tide loading at Castletownbere, West Cork. He was conferred with a BSc in Geomatics from DIT at the Conferring Ceremony for the College of Engineering and Built Environment in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday 3rd November. He is now working as a professional Geomatics Surveyor with Murphy Surveys Ireland.
