Professor Marc Pollefeys to Deliver Keynote at SPAR Europe 2012

Swiss Technology Institute professor to speak on extracting 3D data from images and video

August 21, 2012 (Portland, Maine, USA) – SPAR Point Group announced today that Marc Pollefeys, Professor at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich), will deliver a keynote address at SPAR Europe 2012. In his keynote, “Extracting 3D Data from Image and Video Data,” he will share what is ahead for 3D computer vision, including city reconstruction, autonomous flight, and surveying and mapping. His research combines state-of-the-art approaches developed in the fields of computer vision, computer graphics and photogrammetry to compute 3D models as output while using images or video as input.

“The power of graphics processors enables a real-time automatic approach that is being applied for city planning, indoor mapping, digital historic preservation and beyond,” said Lisa Murray, Director of SPAR Point Group. “Because there are so many applications for Dr. Pollefeys’ work, it will appeal to our diverse audience of 3D professionals from many different industries who come to SPAR Europe to learn about the latest 3D technologies.” SPAR Europe Conference on End-to-End 3D takes place 12-14 November at the World Forum in The Hague.

Dr. Pollefeys is a full professor in the Department of Computer Science of ETH Zurich where he is the head of the Institute for Visual Computing and leads the Computer Vision and Geometry lab. He is also an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, where he also received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1994 and 1999, respectively. His main area of research is computer vision. One of his main research goals is to develop flexible approaches to capture visual representations of real world objects, scenes and events.

Ms. Murray said European professionals working with 3D technologies are keenly interested in the work coming out of universities. “Universities are doing cutting-edge work that is changing the way data is captured, processed and served up,” said Ms. Murray. “Public and private sector professionals want a glimpse at what’s coming before it hits the market.” She said that in addition to having several renowned academics presenting at the conference, SPAR Europe will have its first University Pavilion at the 2012 event. “SPAR Europe attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the newest research, meet with folks behind these innovations, and even discover potential collaborators.”

About SPAR Europe
SPAR Europe Conference on End-to-End 3D brings together professionals from throughout Europe and beyond to discover the latest advances and technologies in 3D data capture, processing and delivery. SPAR Europe targets asset owners, engineers, technology developers and university researchers to present and discuss the latest tools and techniques for using 3D technologies to drive efficiency, improve workflows, reduce project timelines, improve safety and mitigate risk. Fiatech, a consortium of large capital assets owners, will be holding a meeting 12 November 2012 in conjunction with SPAR Europe.
