Inter-County Connector – Contract C Wins Top Honors from Roads & Bridges Magazine

Dewberry’s Inter-County Connector (ICC) – Contract C project was recently selected by Roads & Bridges magazine as a 2011 Top Roads winner. Dewberry is the lead designer on the design-build team for this $513.9-million contract.  The joint venture construction team is composed of Clark Construction, Shirley Contracting Company, Facchina Construction, and Trumbell Corporation.

Traveling cross-county between Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland currently requires driving hilly, twisting, two-lane roads that are frequently congested. Poor sightlines and unfettered access from driveways and cross-streets increases the risk of accidents. With an estimated completion date of November 2011, Contract C extends 3.8 miles and will provide a direct, high-speed connection between Route 29 and I-95, including 1.3 miles of U.S. 29 improvements and 1.9 miles of auxiliary lane and collector-distributor lanes on I-95 between MD 212 (Powder Mill Road) and MD 198. Contract C includes new interchanges at U.S. 29, Briggs Chaney Road and I-95. This new section of highway, in conjunction with the other segments of the ICC, ultimately connecting I-95 to I-270, will significantly change the way people travel in the northern suburbs of Washington D.C., providing high-speed alternate routes to severely congested highways.

Dewberry is responsible for the mapping, surveying, roadway and interchange design, bridge and structure design, stormwater management, geotechnical investigations including significant improvement strategies, floodplain studies, signing and marking, signals, ITS system, electronic toll collection, lighting, traffic analysis, environmental services, noise analysis, landscaping, utility relocations, and construction administration and inspections.
