StreetMapper, the vehicle-based laser mapping system, utilizes the Perception Engine from Allpoint Systems to simplify data processing through automation
StreetMapper, the vehicle-based laser mapping system, is now being offered with a range of tools for the automatic calculation of bridge heights and other measurements. Designed to simplify the complex task of processing the billions of individual laser scanned measurements recorded by the world’s most accurate mobile mapping system StreetMapper Bridges is ideally suited for road construction and maintenance projects and abnormal route calculations.
StreetMapper Bridges automates processing of 3D laser scanned measurements using complex statistical algorithms to identify road surfaces, isolate bridge data, identify lane markings and remove noise – for example traffic on the highway. The application then extracts cross sections from the data and calculates clearances and other user defined measurements. This automation enables large-scale use of laser mapping by eliminating manual inefficiencies and reducing the chance for error.
StreetMapper Bridges is available to all StreetMapper users as either Software as a Service (SaaS) with customers purchasing an annual licence and data storage or as a project based service with StreetMapper developers undertaking data processing to agreed deliverables.
“These tools are a great addition to the StreetMapper portfolio and a must for anyone involved in road surveying,” commented Michael R. Frecks, President and CEO of Terrametrix, LLC a professional survey company with a reputation for the early adoption of technology. “By eliminating the time consuming and repetitive tasks necessary to process raw laser scanned data human resources can be freed up for more critical tasks. This reduces the risk of processing errors for large scale projects and helps achieve significant costs savings while maintaining scales and accuracies.”
StreetMapper, which is a joint development between UK based 3D Laser Mapping and German based guidance and navigation specialist IGI, has been specifically designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, runways, railways, infrastructure and buildings. Using vehicle-mounted lasers offering a 360-degree field of view StreetMapper enables high precision mapping to a range of 300 metres, a capacity of 300,000 measurements per second per sensor and recorded accuracies in independent real world projects of better than 10 millimetres.
StreetMapper Bridges utilises Allpoint Systems’ Perception Engine™ a software processing system that batch processes entire directories of 3D laser scanned data. The Perception Engine uses a hybrid of software tools that mix automation (for time consuming repetitive tasks) with streamlined user interaction (for efficient high level decision making). The software is already in use in tunnel mapping, robotic wastewater pipe inspection and other terrestrial laser scanning projects.
