(Norcross, GA., 6 July 2011) – Leica PaveSmart 3D automated machine control system is paying major dividends for an Iowa contractor by eliminating the variables connected to stringline-controlled concrete paving.
Flynn Co. Inc., a Dubuque, Iowa concrete paving contractor, has invested nearly $300,000 in various Leica Geosystems’ machine control technologies for use on a mainline concrete paver, two grade trimmers, as well as a motor grader and dozer. “We realize that stringless technology is the future of concrete paving and we want to be part of it,” says Jeff Flynn, co-owner of Flynn Co. Inc.
Flynn began utilizing stringless technology in 2009 by including a line item for the equipment in the bid for a project on U.S Highway 65, near Mason City, Iowa. “We bought the Leica paving system for that project,” states Flynn.
After several more successful stringless projects using Leica Geosystems machine control, including one on Highway 67 in Missouri and a 10-mile job on Interstate 35 in Clarke County, Iowa, Flynn Co. Inc. has recently launched construction on its fourth stringless paving project, a 10-mile bypass on U.S. Highway 61 around Fort Madison, Iowa. Working under a $26 million contract with the Iowa DOT, Flynn will put his Leica Geosystems machine control equipment to work trimming grade, placing and trimming base stone, and paving a 10-inch-thick concrete pavement road for the four-lane divided highway.
“The Leica PaveSmart 3D has not only eliminated the labor and cost of stringline, but all the other variables intrinsic to the stringline process. All of these productivity enhancements add up to a monster benefit” Flynn concluded.
