Merrick Wins Project of the Year in MAPPS Geospatial Excellence Awards

Firm also won first place in airborne & satellite acquisition category

Aurora, Colorado – December 18, 2009 – Merrick & Company’s (www.merrick.com) geospatial technologies business unit (Merrick Geospatial Technologies) received the project of the year award, presented at the Management Association of Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS)/ American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) specialty conference, held in San Antonio, Texas in mid-November. The firm’s “Levee Recertification Using Geospatial Technologies” project received the grand award recognition for its utilization of aerial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology and an advanced hydrographic survey. The elevation data generated during the project was in support of the City of Wichita, Kansas’ activities and as part of the process of recertifying approximately 100 miles of levees in the flood prone area.

“The Merrick team did not merely think in terms of what had been done in the past; they actively pursued new ideas and pushed the envelope with new technologies to provide deliverables that would continue to add value for the client long after the immediate project was completed,” said Robert Burch PS, CP, chair of the independent judges panel.

Merrick’s project initially won an award in one of five technical categories. The grand award was subsequently selected from those five categories.

Merrick & Company has a lengthy history in land surveying and mapping. Among the firm’s current work, the geospatial business unit is providing land surveying and/or airborne mapping services to the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Rainwater Basin Joint Venture, Xcel Energy, the Western Area Power Administration, and the Colombian (South America) Navy.
