La Plata, Maryland, July 8, 2009 – Zekiah Technologies, Inc. began a formal internship program for the summer of 2009.
In 2007 James Waltz, a La Plata High School student, convinced Zekiah Technologies, Inc. to hire him as a summer intern. Mr. Waltz impressed the technical staff at Zekiah so much that the following winter break and summer he was hired again and was able to begin work on a Navy contract. Following a year at Shenandoah University, Mr. Waltz was hired as a permanent full-time staff member and continues work on various Department of Defense contracts.
With the success of that initial very informal internship program, the decision was made to start a more formal program for the summer of 2009. Competition for the four internship positions was very intense with many very qualified applicants.
After reviewing resumes and interviewing the various candidates, two college interns and two high school interns were selected. Vic Curtis is a graduate of Thomas Stone High School and is finishing his last year at Frostburg University. Spenser Bolen will graduate in 2010 from Randolph Macon College. Mathew Koontz is a rising Junior at La Plata High School and Kevin Deminne is a recent graduate of Thomas Stone High School and plans to attend Salisbury University in the fall.
“We started this program to be good business citizens – we wanted to provide a positive learning opportunity for local grown talent. What we found though is that it benefits Zekiah both because we are growing new talented hires for our future and because the interns significantly impact our projects during their term here,” states Brianna Bowling, President of Zekiah Technologies. “What we did because we thought it was the ‘right’ thing to do ended up being the ‘right’ thing for Zekiah.”
Spenser Bolen, one of the 2009 interns, said, “this is a great place to work and I’m very happy to be given such an opportunity” and Mathew Koontz stated, “I am learning a lot in my internship that will help me later in my life and Zekiah has a very friendly atmosphere where it is great to work.”
