RETTEW Awards Scholarship to Nontraditional Student

52-Year-Old Began College Career 20 Years Ago; Graduates Cum Laude with Double Major

Lancaster, Pa. — RETTEW, an engineering, planning, environmental consulting and surveying firm, recently awarded the RETTEW Associates Scholarship in Geology to Karlton K. Kohr. The 52-year-old nontraditional student, who began his college career 20 years ago, recently graduated cum laude from Millersville University with degrees in geology and earth science education.

“Karl is a unique individual who deserves to be recognized for his relentless pursuit of an education,” said Mark Lauriello, PE, president, RETTEW. “He is truly an example for others and demonstrates that persistence in life does pay off. I congratulate Karl on achieving his lifelong goal and, on behalf of RETTEW, am proud to bestow this monetary award to him.” The Millersville University Foundation awarded Kohr the RETTEW Associates Scholarship in Geology in the amount of $749 at a ceremony held in April at the university.

“It’s important that people realize that even if you’re older, you can change your path in life,” said Kohr, scholarship recipient. “You just need to put your mind to it.”

Beginning in 1989, Kohr took classes throughout the next 16 years in addition to working as a full- time truck driver. In 2005 he enrolled as a full-time student at Millersville University, double majoring in geology and earth science education. Kohr graduated from Millersville on May 2 and plans to teach earth and space science at the middle school and high school levels while earning a doctorate in structural geology.

“The RETTEW Associates Scholarship in Geology has helped past students and will allow future geology students to meet the increasingly difficult financial environment in furthering their education,” added Kohr. “I wish to express my appreciation to RETTEW for the generous scholarship awarded to me.”

Awarded to an outstanding student majoring in earth sciences or geology with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, the RETTEW Associates Scholarship in Geology is funded by interest earned from a $10,000 endowment that the firm made to Millersville University. Faculty from the university’s earth sciences department selects the scholarship recipient.
