Tampa Bay, Florida, May 26, 2009 – Munsys, Inc. announces Michigan State University (MSU) as the winner of the 2009 Munsys Excellence Award, recognizing them for their “Outstanding use of Munsys”. The entry by MSU demonstrated excellence on many levels and was chosen as the winner from a number of strong entries, each demonstrating a diverse use of Munsys within their organizations.
MSU Engineering and Architectural Services (EAS), a department of the Physical Plant Division of Michigan State University, began its implementation of Munsys in 2006. EAS needed the ability to effectively manage a wide variety of features ranging from building footprints to underground utilities to roads and sidewalks throughout the 5,200 acre campus.
“The driving factor was a need to be able to effectively manage a large number of GIS features and associated data in an AutoCAD based environment, including a campus base map and underground utility infrastructure, and to be able to easily share this information with other departments across campus as well as new project design processes,“ said Jade Freeman, GIS Manager, EAS.
“The biggest impact across the division as a whole has been the ability to leverage the underlying campus base and underground utility infrastructure to build data driven applications on top of these features. Our Landscape Services department was able to map all the lawn panels on campus within a month last year by utilizing line work already in the system and then associate cost centers to maintenance costs.”
In addition to the winner, the following submissions were commended with honorable mentions:
• Pinellas County, FL
• City of St. Petersburg, FL
• City of Garden Grove, CA
• City of Tampa, FL
• City of Oakland, CA
“Although Munsys has been in the North American market for only 5 years, the richness, depth and number of customer deployments is remarkable," says Chris Tolken, President of Munsys. “I think Munsys has reached critical mass in the market place and am excited by our future prospects for growth. The success of Munsys is due to the strong value proposition customers can realize from a tried and tested solution built on industry leading technologies and backed by staff with deep GIS and database experience.”
