Pennoni Engineers Honored by ASCE Philadelphia Section

Philadelphia – Pennoni Associates, a consulting engineering firm headquartered in Philadelphia, is pleased to announce that the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Philadelphia Section honored two of its engineers at its Annual Spring Social held on May 13, 2009. David S. Lowdermilk, P.E., Vice President and Transportation Technology Principal, was named the 2009 Civil Engineer of the Year  and Donald Gusic, P.E., Transportation Project Engineer was named the 2009 Young Engineer of the Year.

As Transportation Technology Principal, Mr. Lowdermilk manages a $21 million annual portion of Pennoni’s $79 million total earnings, along with 142 staff members. He has extensive experience as a staff manager as well as a project manager and is a Registered Professional Engineer in 11 states. Mr. Lowdermilk serves as Principal-in-Charge of two major Pennoni clients, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority. Mr. Lowdermilk also serves as the Program Manager and Engineer of Record for the Burlington County Bridge Commission (BCBC).

Mr. Lowdermilk earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University. He is an active member of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE), where he serves on the Board for the Delaware County Chapter; an active Board member of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Delaware Valley Section; President of the American Council of Engineering Companies/PA (ACEC/PA) Philadelphia Chapter; and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as well as the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

A 24-year resident of Delaware County, Mr. Lowdermilk currently resides in Wallingford, PA. In his free time, Mr. Lowdermilk participates in various community activities. He is active in his synagogue and serves on the House and Grounds Committee. Mr. Lowdermilk also serves as Stage Manager with The Players Club of Swarthmore, a non-profit community theatre company based in Delaware County. Furthering his activities in theatre, Mr. Lowdermilk is active with Wasted Talent Productions, http://www.wastedtalentproductions.com, where he is a partner in a production company that provides technical theatrical expertise, including set design/construction, lighting, sound, and staging to high school and middle school groups.

Donald Gusic, P.E.
Mr. Gusic, a Project Manager with Pennoni’s Transportation Technology, has served as a Project Engineer in the Highway Group for the last 4 years. He also plays a strong role in hiring and management of co-ops and interns for the Transportation Technology. Through his efforts, recruitment and retention of top quality graduate engineers has helped the Division grow from 15-30 engineers in the last four years.

Mr. Gusic earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Drexel University. He is a registered Professional Engineer of Pennsylvania and is a member of several industry organizations including the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Mr. Gusic has been a Board Member of the Younger Member Forum for ASCE for several years and has served in various leadership roles and elected positions. Currently, he is the President of the Younger Member Forum.

Born in Honolulu, HI, and raised in Martinsburg, WV, Mr. Gusic now is a resident of the Passyunk Square section of Philadelphia. Outside of the engineering industry, he volunteers his time for community events such as tree plantings, neighborhood clean-ups, plant sales and other events that support the Passyunk Square Civic Association, Columbus Park Advisory Council and SPADO (dog park association). He was president of SPADO for two years and currently sits on the board.
