The 3rd annual Florida Surveyors’ Festival, a celebration of National Surveyors Week, is shaping up to be the biggest and best to date. This event offers a variety of fun activities for of all ages. On hand will be surveying and mapping exhibitors, regional artists and crafters, education exhibitors, live demonstrations, local musicians, food, survey games, and geocaching, to name a few. The event is open to public.
The 2009 festival opens Saturday, March 21, at 11:00 am inside F. Burton Smith Park in Cocoa, Florida. The fun begins with live music and southern barbeque in the Main Pavilion. Our surveying brothers from Volusia County, Larry Efrid and his BBQ team will be back this year with their famous Florida BBQ. Other assorted food vendors will be in the concession areas.
Surveying and Mapping exhibitors will offer guests a look at some new technology. This is a wonderful opportunity to see live demonstrations of mapping hardware and software. Universities that offer a Geomatics degree will have students on hand to show off their school’s program and answer any questions about the curriculum.
Regional artists and crafters will dot the park’s landscape displaying their talents and merchandise. The park offers a perfect setting for a leisurely stroll to view, and interact with these talented artisans.
The kids and adults will enjoy the rock climbing wall, surveying games, navigating to hidden caches throughout the park (geocaching), and a variety of other activities. This is the perfect opportunity for the family to interact while learning about the surveying and mapping profession.
Another highlight will be Dean Van Camp and Dr. Sandra Wise of Florida Eco Safaris , Crescent J Ranch at Forever Florida presenting live horse training demonstrations with two Florida Cracker Horses. Learn how these trainers, unusual combination of "old time" traditional techniques and new psychological approaches come together to retain the unique heritage, style and carriage of these special horses, who echo the proud history of early cattle ranching in the state of Florida.
Festival guests will be entertained throughout the day with live music that ranges from traditional Irish, American fiddling, a splash of folk, bluegrass, and blues. The Florida Cracker Cloggers will be dancing; raffles and door prizes will be announced throughout the day.
The entrance fee is $5 per vehicle. All music and festival activities are FREE. This is the best deal in Florida for a day of entertainment. Festival volunteers receive a variety of reward packages that include free entrance, free meal ticket and a festival tee shirt.
