ERDAS at Incident Management Summit

Norcross (Georgia, USA) – ERDAS announces its participation at the Incident Management Summit, September 11-12, 2008 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Vincent Dessard, Senior Vice President Business Development, ERDAS, will be a speaker discussing “Interoperability Provided by the OGC/ISO Standards.”

Impacting billions of people every year, traffic incidents have been identified by the United Nations and the World Health Organization as a major public health crisis, at the scale of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Producing carbon emissions, traffic jams and road accidents, traffic problems contribute to the greenhouse effect and negatively impact our environment. Moreover, traffic congestion restrains mobility and goods transportation, damaging the economy. To carry out the process of incident management efficiently, police, fire department, ambulance and emergency services need an infrastructure providing quick access to accurate and up-to-date spatial information.

A major gateway to Europe, the Netherlands is one of the world’s most densely populated countries, making road traffic a complex and crucial challenge. Organized by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat), the Incident Management Summit identifies problems to initiate a European project for an interoperable traffic incident management system.

“An efficient incident management system must ensure access to the numerous involved stakeholders and meet the vital requirement of rapid information sharing and updating. OGC/ISO standards offer the interoperability platform allowing any third party to freely access critical incident and traffic management information, without any vendor dependency”, said Vincent Dessard. “As a Strategic Member of the OGC, ERDAS actively develops and promotes open standards-based geospatial interoperability, which are in line with the European Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) design principles of INSPIRE.”
